“Education and the sharing of knowledge is the foundation of our modern society. We cannot function without knowing what we are doing and how it relates to everything around us. There’s a reason we go to school from a very young age, and it’s to set each person up for success in this ever changing world. Education is how we stay up to date with the latest technology, trends in scientific research, changes in our culture, and so much more. But, above all else, education is laying the foundation for students to become full fledged adults…..”

RTI: Response to Intervention

This is an academic based support system, built on a multi-tiered supported system to help students who are falling behind academically.

In the band room, positive reinforcement, repetition, and critical thinking are integral aspects of making good music.

Ms. Mudiwa takes a fun staff photo for her ID at Del Sol Academy of the Arts. Note the Yoshi on her head as an inside joke among music staff.

Ms. Mudiwa takes the art of “Stepping” into her elementary music classroom. Taking students from the known of “body percussion” into the unknown of “Step” allows her students to try new things, learn about new cultures, and move more in the classroom. The students will perform this Step routine for their winter concert in December of 2022.

Step into my Classroom

Here, Ms. Mudiwa is helping the next generation of middle school musicians pick their instrument. As a single reed specialist, Ms. Mudiwa guides students around the Monte Vista area through the process of playing the mouthpiece of a clarinet and/or saxophone. Parents are very excited to see their children try new things with a helpful and trusting adult.

PBIS: Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports

This is a behavior based support system, built on a multi-tiered support system to help students who are falling behind due to their behavior.

In the band room, separating students into a practice room, working with them individually before/after school, and getting to know them as a person can help them take more responsibility over the music we make together.

Catch Ms. Mudiwa controlling her Symphonic Band’s dynamics and style with just her hand and facial expressions. While rehearsing “Der Erlkönig” she puts on a stoic, aggressive face to convey power to her student’s playing.

Welcome to my high school music theory class. Here is a snippet of what it's like to be in my class. We have been working on the concept of half steps and whole steps and are now applying them to building major scales. This class had about 90 students, as I had to combine with the other music theory class since the teacher wasn't in that day.

In this music theory class of about 90 students, I talk through some of the options as an artist. Growing up a musician, you hear the term "starving artist" from "concerned" friends and family who don't understand how the music industry works. I wanted to take the time to talk through all the possibilities as a musician that can make money, from teaching to composing, performing on cruise ships or on Broadway shows, working radio stations, or building an audience. I don't want any of my students to turn away from music only because they feel there is no money in it. There is money in anything you are passionate about.

From July until the end of the Marching season in mid October, Ms. Mudiwa was able to work with the woodwinds in the Del Sol Academy Marching Band. During her time there she worked on marching techniques with the freshmen, and many aspects of musicality including dynamics, clear articulations, clean tone productions, and projecting to the furthest audience members. Here is a small snippet of the 2022 “Amongst the Stars” marching show DSA successfully put on, with a woodwind feature molded by the help of Ms. Mudiwa and Mr. Cannon.

Here are some quick snippets into the classroom with Ms. Mudiwa conducting both the middle and upper bands at DSA

The quarter was long and rehearsals were productive. These are the fruits of the Symphonic Band (right) and Wind Symphony (left) labor. Ms. Mudiwa worked with these Del Sol Academy ensembles everyday during her first half of student teaching, leading up to this fall concert. Focusing heavily on good posture, good breathing, solid tone production, correct notes, exaggerate dynamics, and beautiful story telling, Ms. Mudiwa directs these ensemble through very engaging and successful performances of Scott Watson’s Der Erlkonig and Frank Erickson’s Air for Band.
